Gearbox

Hi have a 1997/1998 Mk 1 Galalxy which has developed a bad whine from the manual gearbox. Is this likely to be fixable (I know that's a big question) or if not will gearbox's from Alhambras and Sharans fit and am I likely to find any difference in cost:? Any ideas on cost or best place to get one from? Anybody have any experience of Slick 50 for gearbox's. I suspect I won't really be able to afford a gearbox at the moment but plan on buying a News Galaxy next year when my Tessa matures so would really like to solve this problem as cheaply as possible (wouldn't we all).

I'd be thankful you get any kind of wine from your gearbox, good or bad. I have to buy mine from Oddbins!!

Don't know much about gearboxes I'm afraid .... just a little bored in work :blink:

First obvious question, have you checked the oil and changed it, just in case.

 

Secondly dont use Slick 50 or similar, they are a con, might as well chuck some sawdust in there !

Seriously, does it change pitch with a speed change or a gear change? Does it stop when depressing the clutch. I had a whining gearbox on a Sierra. Found the main input shaft bearing dry and worn out. OK to change on the Sierra but I wouldn't have a clue on the Gal

I've got a '97 2.0 petrol, my gearbox makes a whine in second and third dependant on the revs, done it for nearly 20,000 miles.

 

Just turn the radio up!

...Or get a Land Rover, you won't hear the gearbox for the diffs! :rolleyes:
